Hi and welcome:
In my last post, I broke scene into seven basic elements and gave you the assignment of writing the first three into your current work or something new. To recap, they were: location, wider location, and the natural world. Keep going on that. And as you do, I offer up a concrete example that brings the SRC into clearer perspective.
Norman Ollestad is a terrific writer and his book Crazy for the Storm is a pitch perfect example of how a memoir can be written to draw the reader in and hold her close. His book also “goes the distance” which means it has a recognizable plot and an underlying structure to support that plot.
This is not a scream-memoir (which makes you want to scream and throw the book across the room). Ollestad goes to the heart of a boy who becomes a true hero. At age twelve! Yes, I’ll be writing up a commentary about this book soon, but for now, let’s take on a single chapter.

You’ll need two things:
Paid subscribers, thank you and read on.
Everyone else, I invite you to become a paid subscriber which means the world to a working writer, like me. Plus, you get to continue on with this terrific teaching. 🤗
